What a fabulous weekend on the NFYFC Agri Jersey Study Tour…
25 of us set off from around the UK and as I walked into Manchester Airport Terminal 1 Departures it would be an understatement to say I was a bit nervous about not knowing anyone and never having done anything like this before!
Once meeting up with a few others flying from Manchester and then arriving in Jersey and working out the best bus to get (buses are the main transport mode in Jersey so it’s a big network!) we made our way to the accomodation in a youth hostel style centre.
After an evening of getting to know the rest of the group the first day was jam-packed with an early start for a trip to the La Mare wine estate where we looked around the vineyard, and distillery and of course sampled some of the various wines, liqueurs, chocolates and fudge that they made. It was a really interesting visit and a beautiful relaxed place to live and work – the perfect sunny weather also helped add to the continental feel!

As many of you will know, the paper membership form has been replaced with a new online membership portal.
On Wednesday 14th September, club officers and leaders met to discuss the new system and process that must be followed to get signed up to get all the benefits of YFC membership.
NFYFC is mourning the loss of its patron Her Majesty The Queen and sends its deepest sympathies to the Royal Family.
Since 1957, The Queen has been a committed patron of Young Farmers’ Clubs and the opportunities the organisation provides to rural young people. The Queen met with YFC members over her many years of service, including presenting awards at The Royal Show.
Many of our County Federations have been awarded the Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service and earlier this year, Young Farmers’ Clubs were delighted to celebrate the Platinum Jubilee by lighting beacons and planting trees. Memories YFC shall treasure, always.
The Queen showed a keen interest in agriculture, and several of the Royal Estates and Residences hold working farms. She was a true countrywoman, who understood the challenges young farmers face to feed the nation and always championed rural communities.
Organising YFC meetings and events during the official mourning period
Yorkshire Federation of Young Farmers’ Clubs requests clubs and districts follow the guidance issued by the National Federation of Young Farmers’ Clubs during the official mourning period. Details of the guidance can be found here. https://www.nfyfc.org.uk/TheQueen
After the trip to Peru being delayed for 2 years due to COVID, it was definitely a case of third time lucky and better late than never. When I left sunny Yorkshire and left for the big smoke, I didn’t have a clue what was coming, what to expect or who I was going to meet. We successfully all arrived in London Heathrow all apprehensive, but this soon settled, and we were through check in and security and on our way to Peru, via Miami.
We landed in Cusco where we were met by the Projects Abroad team and quickly whisked off to meet our host families. Who didn’t speak much English so there was a lot of google translate or simply looking blank, but we got there! We were thrown straight into volunteering, I volunteered at Picol Kindergarten in the class of 3 year olds. It was great to get involved with their learning and they absolutely loved having us in their class too! We also attended a care home in Cusco, where their vegetable patch was in need of some much needed TLC. The goal was to plant the strawberry plants out, which involved picking the strawberry plants out, digging up the strawberry plant plot, adding organic fertiliser to replant these established plants and seedlings also. The outdoor plots all needed digging over and the dead leaves picking off the other plants indoors. The staff and residents were all so appreciative of our help and input for this and I look forward to seeing how the strawberries grow and what else they decide to grow outdoors!
We also were zoo keepers for the day too in a rescue centre for a variety of animals including condors, bears (including the same breed as Paddington!!) and tortoises. There was the necessary cleaning to do, but the highlight has to be feeding and massaging the shells of the tortoises and observing the condor flying exercise! We also visited a traditional Inca tribe, making mud bricks to build their properties and participating in their traditional ceremony to bless the land and animals they have as well as wearing their traditional dress.
But the highlights of the trip include the trip to Machu Picchu which is just incredible and the Rainbow Mountain. I know most places you go never look like the postcard photos you see but trust me, both these places do and are just stunning. We also visited sites of Inca Ruins, again set in stunning scenery were phenomenal to explore. During our stay, we were staying with a Peruvian family who definitely gave us an insight into Peruvian life and some of their traditional dishes. We even tried salsa! Which was more successful than the Spanish!! As we stayed in Cusco, we spent time exploring the city and what it has to offer – which was like living a geography lesson, but a beautiful place. In true Young Farmers’ style – we were quick to locate the Irish Bar!
A truly excellent trip which was well worth the wait. Now to plan the next trip!

Winksley-cum-Grantley YFC held a sell-out party by kind permission of Thirsk Auction Mart on Saturday 26th March 2022. After the sad and sudden passing of our friend and past member Hannah Brown known as Brownie, we set out to host a good old ‘knees up’ in her memory and raise money for the UK Sepsis Trust whilst doing so. Brownie loved nothing more than a night out in one of her many pairs of boots, the favourite ones were the Fairfax and Favor Boots.
The do itself was a sell-out and was attended by members past and present of young farmers from all over the country. We danced the night away to music by DJ Ed Marshall. The bar staff (all volunteers!) were certainly kept busy all night but it was so lovely to see everyone together again, having fun and supporting a phenomenal cause after the COVID pandemic. We are sure Brownie was watching over us having a Baileys and a ‘boogie’ with us!
After the monies were counted following the ‘do’ it was confirmed the total of £13,100 raised which would be donated to the UK Sepsis Trust. We presented our cheque to Beth, from the UK Sepsis Trust who confirmed that this money will be used to continue research into preventing Sepsis and preventing death from Sepsis also. We know Brownie will be as proud of us as we are of ourselves. A huge thank you to everyone who made it happen and make the do the success it was!
